Jackson was named in 1894 after trapper David Edward “Davey” Jackson, who trapped beaver in the area in the late 1820s. At that time, people commonly used the word “hole” to describe a valley surrounded by high mountains, and the reason this valley got its name. Shops, restaurants, and attractions abound in this walkable, historic western town. Town Square and its famous antler arches are located in the middle of Jackson, surrounded by art galleries, historic hotels, and fun places to eat, shop, and enjoy nightlife. The Grand Dynamics’ Towner Tour and Jackson Hole Scavenger Hunt offer fun and interactive ways to explore the town.

THE SNAKE RIVER
The Snake River, designated a wild and scenic river by the US Congress, winds beneath the shadow of the Tetons and offers a huge assortment of activities from mellow to high adventure. After traveling from its headwaters in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the Snake meanders southward out of Jackson Lake through the heart of Grand Teton National Park. Wildlife abounds on the river including elk, mule deer, bison and bald eagles. Snake River Whitewater is a seven mile stretch of class three whitewater action. Calmer scenic stretches also provide a beautiful way to explore nature along the river.
